Background overview
Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth is one of the South Coast’s most popular shopping and leisure destinations – a vibrant harbourside outlet owned by Landsec and home to more than 90 premium brands. Set against the historic waterfront, it attracts millions of visitors each year and plays a central role in the region’s retail economy.
When Landsec identified a dormant façade within the scheme, the goal was to transform it into a dynamic digital landmark – one that could enhance the shopper experience, generate new commercial value and align with the company’s strong ESG principles.
Working in partnership with media owner Ocean Outdoor, Landsec sought a trusted supplier capable of delivering a high-quality outdoor display that combined technical excellence with sustainability. EcoVista was appointed following a competitive tender to deliver a full turnkey solution – from concept and design coordination through to installation, commissioning and ongoing support.
Clients challenge
The brief placed sustainability and innovation at its core. Landsec’s procurement process emphasised environmental performance, supplier ethics and long-term value, requiring partners to demonstrate ISO accreditation, low-carbon practices and transparent reporting.
Alongside the ESG requirements, the project demanded close collaboration across multiple stakeholders – Landsec, Ocean Outdoor and the site’s existing structural engineers – with installation taking place within a live, high-traffic retail environment. The schedule was also challenging, with completion required before the busy Christmas trading period to enable Ocean’s first advertising campaigns.
Our solution
EcoVista delivered a seamless turnkey solution, taking full ownership of design coordination, procurement, fabrication, installation and handover. The team worked with Landsec’s appointed structural engineers to refine the design, ensuring the new screen integrated safely and sympathetically with the existing building.
A high-performance Daktronics DVX-1210 outdoor LED display was selected for its reliability and image quality. Measuring 6 metres by 4 metres with an 8mm pixel pitch, the display offers exceptional brightness, colour uniformity and full power and data redundancy to guarantee uptime.
EcoVista managed the entire process directly with Daktronics, expediting manufacturing and logistics to meet Ocean Outdoor’s pre-Christmas “in-charge” deadline. Installation was carried out by EcoVista’s specialist crews, using precision-engineered secondary steelwork anchored to the building’s structure.
Throughout the project, environmental performance was monitored using EcoVista’s CarbonTrack and VistaTrack tools, which capture embodied and operational carbon data across the supply chain. The installation was delivered safely, on schedule and to specification, backed by a six-year manufacturer’s warranty and EcoVista’s proactive maintenance and remote-monitoring service.
The
result
The completed installation has transformed an unused elevation into a vibrant, revenue-generating focal point for Gunwharf Quays. For Landsec, it demonstrates how digital media can be integrated responsibly within the built environment, supporting the company’s journey toward a net-zero estate. For Ocean Outdoor, the new screen adds a prime South Coast location to its premium network, already attracting strong advertiser interest.
Delivered with precision, speed and attention to detail, the project showcases EcoVista’s ability to unite creativity, technology and sustainability through a single turnkey process – setting a new standard for environmentally responsible digital display projects.
